Simone Santillo, Scandiano (Reggio Emilia), 1996, (Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Informatica, Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia 2021), appassionato di temi di visione ed intelligenza artificiale negli anni della magistrale, ha fatto application ed è stato selezionato per il tirocinio presso Deep Vision Consulting nell’estate 2020, dove ha prodotto una tesi di laurea sullo stato dell’arte in Object Detectors, con particolare attenzione sulle caratteristiche rilevanti per lo sfruttamento industriale. Simone è diventato parte del gruppo di Deep Vision Consulting ad inizio 2021.
Oltre alla visione artificiale, la passione per il coding spinge Simone a partecipare regolarmente agli Advent of Code e ad altre sfide algoritmiche in Python e C++.
Simone Santillo, born in Scandiano (Reggio Emilia, Italy), 1996, (MS in Computer Engineering, ’21), got passionate for computer vision and artificial intelligence since the years of graduated studies; in summer 2020 he applied and got selected for an internship in Deep Vision Consulting, where he wrote a thesis on a review on object detector, with a particular emphasis on the relevant features for industrial exploitation. He joined the Deep Vision Consulting group in early 2021.
On top of computer vision, the passion for coding brings Simone to regularly join the Advent of Code and other algorithmic challenges for Python and C++.
Emanuele Ghelfi, born in Fidenza (Parma, Italy), 1994 (MS in Computer Science and Engineering, major in Artificial Intelligence, ‘18). Emanuele’s thesis work was translated to the paper “Reinforcement Learning in Configurable Environments”, eventually accepted at ICML (International Conference on Machine Learning) 2019. Emanuele is also co-author of the book “The Reinforcement Learning Workshop”, available on Amazon, that presents the main concepts of Reinforcement Learning, both from the theoretical and the practical point of view, through Python coding. Strongly passionate about computational geometry, deep learning, reinforcement learning and GANs, Emanuele continued pursuing his continuous scientific updating even after graduation: in 2019 he gave two talks on GANs (“Deep Diving into GANs: From Theory To Production”) at EuroSciPy, Bilbao, Spain and PyConX 2019, Florence, Italy. Riccardo Buscaroli, Imola, Italy, 1994 (Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Informatica, Università di Bologna 2019), sin dai primi anni di studio all’università, si è appassionato a temi di Visione Artificiale. Per la sua Tesi di laurea magistrale ha sviluppato un software per l’automazione della lettura e dell’interpretazione di diagrammi di giochi di logica e matematica.
La sua naturale attitudine al pensiero logico e la passione per la scrittura di codice, ha portato Riccardo a distinguersi nelle discipline scientifiche sin dagli anni delle scuole medie: è stato medaglia di bronzo alle finali internazionali delle Olimpiadi di Scienze della Terra 2010, due volte medaglia di bronzo alle finali italiane delle Olimpiadi di Informatica (2011 e 2012), e dal 2006 al 2015 ha raggiunto per ben 8 volte le finali italiane dei Giochi Matematici (due volte C1, una volta C2, due volte L1, tre volte L2) ed una volta le finali italiane delle Olimpiadi di Biologia.
Ha una estrema facilità ad apprendere nuovi linguaggi di programmazione, e la sua passione per le tecnologie si estende anche alla computer graphics, al 3D modeling e, perché no, al mettere questi elementi insieme per la creazione di nuovi videogiochi. Si è unito al gruppo di Deep Vision Consulting subito dopo la laurea, ad inizio 2019.
Riccardo Buscaroli, Imola, Italy, 1994 (MS in Computer Engineering ‘19), since his early years spent at university, he got extremely passionate about computer vision. During his Master thesis he developed a software to read and interpret diagrams related to logic and mathematical games.
His natural attitude to logical thinking and the passion for coding lead Riccardo to stand out since junior high school years: he was allotted the bronze medal at the international finals of International Earth Science Olympiads 2010, twice the bronze medal at the italian finals of International Olympiads in Informatics (2011 and 2012), and from 2006 to 2015 he reached 8 times the italian finals of International Championship of Math Games (twice at C1 category, once at C2, twice at L1, three times at L2) and once the italian finals of International Biology Olympiads.
He has an extremely quick learning curve on any programming language. His passion for technology extends also to computer graphics, 3D modeling and, why not, put them together for coding new PC games.
He joined the Deep Vision Consulting team just after graduating, in early 2019.
Giovanni Gualdi, born in Modena (Italy), 1978, (MS ’03, PhD ’10), head of Deep Vision Consulting, which he founded in 2011.
He is main inventor of 2 patents (U.S.P.T.O.) and author of more than 20 papers in international journals and conference proceedings (see updated list).
In 2002-2004 Giovanni served as research associate in the Computer Vision and Robotics Research (CVRR) Lab directed by Prof. Mohan Trivedi at UCSD (University of California, San Diego) and in the Multimedia and Mobile Streaming Labs (MMSL) in Hewlett Packard Labs (Palo Alto, California), addressing vision-based multiple object tracking in sensor networks.
In 2006-2010, during his PhD, Giovanni’s main focus was on video surveillance in mobile scenarios, with a particular attention to object detection.
Being appreciated by his customers, Giovanni and his group’s consultant activity extended beyond computer vision, tackling other complementary fields of Computer Engineering and Software Development, namely Embedded Platforms, Robotics, Simulation and Applied Mathematics, Multimedia.
The fastly growing pace of Deep Vision Consulting is taking most of Giovanni’s time over project management and customers relationships, however he purposely keep active in technical development. In the past few years he served on many projects, tackling: slam by stereo cameras, people tracking from thermal cameras, people and posture analysis from depth cameras, face and facial features analysis, video encoding and streaming, plate detection, 3D object analysis by use of profilometers, multiple object tracking by monocular cameras, geometry and pose recovery for augmented reality, medical imaging and sport analysis, optical character recognition for the gaming industry, robotic kinodynamic path optimization and many others.
Additionally he served as technical consultant for the preparation of applications for Horizon 2020 SME Phase 2, which eventually all obtained excellent scores and part of them got funded (see press release).
Michele Fornaciari, born in Correggio (Reggio Emilia, Italy), 1985, (MS ’10, PhD ’13), main author of several papers in international journals and conference proceedings (see updated list), lecturer of computer vision master courses; he joined Deep Learning and Computer Vision Consulting in 2015.
In 2011-2013, during his PhD, Michele’s main focus was on highly optimized image processing in embedded and mobile scenarios; in 2014 he developed an algorithm to detect ellipse in monocular images, which was considered as state of the art in literature.
In 2014-2016 as post-doc of University of Modena he developed OpenCV and C++/Qt based applications for several computer vision projects. In 2015-2016 as post-doc of University of Venice (IUAV) he focused on the implementation of statistical models for turning points prediction on economic series.
In 2015 he joined StackOverflow with the nickname Miki to stay up to date with OpenCV and C++ developments. Now he’s 4th in the “OpenCV” tag all-time ranking, with more than 500 accepted answers.
Michele plays a key role in Deep Learning and Computer Vision Consulting, because of his solid experience in image processing, unquestionable programming skills, and extreme practical sense for problem solving.
Francesco Solera, born in Mirandola (Modena, Italy), 1988, (MS ’14, PhD ’17), is author of several papers in top-ranked international journals and conference proceedings in the field of computer vision and machine learning (see updated list). For his PhD studies, he also received two best paper awards. He joined Deep Vision Consulting in 2017.
In the course of the Phd, his research interests focused on applying machine learning to problems like people tracking, group detection and crowd analysis at large (see the github).
In 2015 he was research assistant at Duke University (North Carolina, USA), working on multi-camera multi-target tracking under the supervision of prof. Carlo Tomasi.

Nel 2011-2013, durante il dottorato di ricerca, Michele si è occupato di ottimizzazione di algoritmi di image processing nel mondo embedded e mobile; nel 2014 ha sviluppato un algoritmo per rilevare ellissi in immagini, considerato a lungo lo stato dell’arte in letteratura.
Nel 2014-2016 come post-doc dell’Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia ha sviluppato applicazioni OpenCV e C++/Qt per svariati progetti di visione artificiale. Nel 2015-2016 come post-doc dell’Università di Venezia (IUAV), si è occupato di modelli statistici per la predizione di punti di svolta su serie temporali.
Nel 2015 ha creato l’utente “Miki” in StackOverflow, con lo scopo di tenersi aggiornato in OpenCV e C++. Al momento della redazione dell’articolo, è in 4a posizione nel tag “OpenCV” all-time ranking, con più di 500 risposte accettate.
Michele ricopre un ruolo fondamentale in Deep Learning and Computer Vision Consulting, grazie alla sua solida esperienza in image processing, indiscutibili conoscenze di programmazione e spiccato senso di problem solving.
Eugenio Nurrito, Modena, Italy, 1990 (MS in Applied Physics ’16), during the course of his studies he mastered the themes of parallel computing (at Cineca), artificial vision and deep learning, techniques used extensively in his thesis work in medical imaging. He joined the Deep Vision Consulting group in 2018.
Always promoter of the open source cultural approach, he has broad knowledge of the Linux world.
He is passionate and expert of Python, that he exploits to tackle themes of software designing, prototyping and development of advanced engineered solutions for deep learning, big data analysis and cloud services.
Motivated by an inborn curiosity for the use of IT applied to the world of science, in the free time he enjoys designing solutions by means of micro-controllers and single board embedded PCs like Arduino and Raspberry, or by Android apps development, like “Fiumi Emilia-Romagna” (over 6000 downloads), which allows a real time check of water levels of rivers over the Italian territory.
Eugenio Nurrito, modenese, 1990 (Laurea Magistrale in Fisica Applicata, Università di Bologna, 2016), durante il percorso di studi ha approfondito con particolare attenzione temi di calcolo parallelo (presso il Cineca), di visione artificiale e deep learning, tecniche utilizzate approfonditamente anche nella tesi di laurea su temi di medical imaging. Si è unito al gruppo di Deep Vision Consulting nel 2018.
Da sempre favorevole all’approccio culturale dell’open source, è profondo conoscitore del mondo Linux.
E’ appassionato ed esperto di Python, con il quale affronta temi di progettazione, prototipazione ma anche sviluppo di soluzioni ingegnerizzate per deep learning, big data analysis e servizi in cloud.
Stimolato da una naturale curiosità per l’utilizzo dell’informatica applicata al mondo delle scienze, ama realizzare nel tempo libero soluzioni basate su microcontrollori e single board PC embedded quali Arduino e Raspberry o applicazioni Mobile, di cui la più nota è “Fiumi Emilia-Romagna” (oltre 6000 download), che permette di controllare in tempo reale il livello di piena dei fiumi sul territorio italiano tramite dispositivi Android.

Benchè il ritmo di crescita incalzante di Deep Vision Consulting occupi la maggior parte del tempo su questioni di management e gestione clienti, tuttavia Giovanni di proposito si tiene sempre attivo sul fronte tecnico. Negli ultimi anni ha servito in numerosi progetti, occupandosi di: slam in telecamere stereo, people tracking da telecamere termiche (far infrared), analisi di persone e di posture da telecamere di profondità, analisi di volti e di caratteristiche facciali, encoding e streaming video, riconoscimento targhe, analisi di oggetti 3D da point clouds di profilometri, multiple object tracking da telecamere monoculari, stima della posa e della geometria per realtà aumentata, medical imaging, analisi sportive, optical character recognition (OCR) per l’industria del gaming, ottimizzazione di percorrenza di traiettorie per robots, e molti altri.
Infine, Giovanni ha offerto le proprie competenze per la preparazione di una domanda di finanziamento di Horizon 2020 SME Phase 2, che ha ottenuto ottimi voti ed è stata infine approvata (vedi comunicato stampa).
